Something spectacular from outer space to awe as well as shock us from complacency, hopefully – Fayth Daramola

As I was about to close my shift at the end of Monday’s (April 14, 2014) work, many colleagues and I, even if to a lesser degree, were excited about the view and sight of nature’s most awe-inspiring event: the moon passing through the earth. It was of course all over the news that the moon will turn red and there are going to be three more of such in the nearest future. They say it is “Blood Moon” because at totality, the darkest part of the eclipse will appear in a deep red color and that the visibility would first be sighted from North America. Even the most jaded astronomers were excited.

This event had different sides to different people. To some, it was going to be refreshing to see the moon in ‘a beautiful color’, some felt it was time to take a historic photograph for National Geographic. My friend’s wife who attended University of Metaphysical Sciences with a Master’s Degree in witchcraft (Yes, she’s a witch!) says the signs are deeply intimidating. Spiritualists saw it as a sign from God talking to humans just as the Texas televangelist Pastor John Hagee of the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio warned that it is ‘End Times’ suggesting that it is possibly a sign of a transition from one era of human civilization to another. To support his fears, he refers people to Acts 2:19-20 where it is stated: And I will show wonders in Heaven above and signs in the Earth beneath, the sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.

Whether this is truly and literarily translated to suggest that the ‘End Times’ is here, I don’t know although, I wonder if the coincidence of the dastardly mass murder that took place in Nigeria few hours before the eclipse wasn’t a confirmation of the prophesy. An explosion that ripped through a busy bus station in Abuja killed at least 72 people and wounded 164. Barely 24 hours after that, 100 school girls were abducted by gun men in Borno. A few hours after, the Civil Rights lawyer who stopped the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge tollgate; Ebun Olu Adegboruwa’s life was being sought after. The National Assembly Complex in Abuja went through bomb scare and every business including adjourning banks was closed just few hours after the appearance of Blood Moon. Scary, right? But fellow countrymen don’t seem to care. Even the leaders, all they could do was visit the scene and the hospital where survivors are. You can’t blame them if the flag is not lowered for national mourning. Otherwise the flag would remain perpetually half-mast because it is disaster upon cataclysm. Nigerians have now formed a resistant to sad news, sad.

Critically thinking, if that scripture is truly a prophecy, then the return of ‘Our Lord’ is imminent and Nigerians and their leaders shall be judged. If true, we will likely earn ‘F’ on everything for destroying the confluence of God’s handiworks on the altar of political self-centeredness from the leaders and the complacent leds.

Again, just thinking, if God had wanted to send a message to all of humanity and Nigerians in particular, isn’t there a much easier method than rearranging the orbits of high mass of celestial objects, thereby having people kill each other in such cruel manners? Maybe God would have whispered messages into our ears or minds but would we have listened? May be it’s not only about Nigeria but truly the whole world. A plane carrying 239 people vanished on air since 6 weeks ago, Russia is marching on Ukraine. The Al-Qaida had an open AGM today. A ship of over 300 passengers on the coast of South Korea is sinking, as I write this essay.

Earthquakes and tsunamis seem to be appearing in record numbers recently. Many things upon which modern civilization depends are simply not sustainable and it all seems tilt towards driving us to an end. Potential catastrophes include: use of fossil water aquifers, rapid using up of fossil fuels, global loss of agricultural top soils, dependence on unsafe nuclear energy, mass poisoning of the population with heavy metals and toxic chemicals, systemic global (and personal, because I get broke too often than usual) monetary collapse and debt catastrophe, and risk of genetic pollution and crop failures due to GMOs and monoculture.

To anyone who is already so blind that cannot see the destruction of humanity happening all around us, I very much doubt a series of blood moon eclipses is going to suddenly awaken them to reality. Three more to come, the astronauts say. Scary.
