“Because he had contact with somebody who died from Ebola, he was quarantined in his own country, but he evaded the quarantine and came to Nigeria…”

Fresh information from Liberia suggests that the late Patrick Sawyer, the first man to die of Ebola in Nigeria, was in fact quarantined by Liberian health authorities prior to boarding a flight to Nigeria.

THIS DAY reports that Liberian Minister of State II for Foreign Affairs, Sr. Nurudeen Mohammed, said that this information arose upon discussion of talks between PresidentJohnson-Sirleaf and Nigeria’s Ambassador to Liberia, Chigozie Oby-Nadozie. Sawyer’s sister had allegedly died of the virus before his trip to Nigeria, a tragedy that is said to have been his method of contracting the virus.

Vice President of ECOWAS, Dr. Toga Mcintosh, further confirmed that Sawyer did in fact flee medical watch placed upon him after his sister’s reported death. At a briefing today, Mcintosh said “because he had contact with somebody who died from Ebola, he was quarantined in his own country, but he evaded the quarantine and came to Nigeria.”

The minister encourages affected West African countries to come together to combat the crisis, rather than shuffle the responsibility.

Sawyer is reported to have acted erratically and looked sick on CCTV footage from Liberia’s James Spriggs Payne airport in Monrovia, Liberia, raising security suspicion there. Despite this, he was allowed to fly out of the country.

In article published on its website, Liberian newspaper The New Dawn reports that CCTV footage from the James Spriggs Payne airport in the capital Monrovia, shows that Sawyer was visibly ill before his flight.

The footage reportedly showed Sawyer avoiding bodily contact with other travelers and airport officials. That he might have known the extent of his sickness was implied by the statement that, “his face bore a sad countenance like someone who was troubled.” Additionally, the article said the video shows Sawyer, “lying flat on his stomach on the floor in the corridor of the airport a sign of someone in excruciating pain.” The Liberian national passed away on Thursday July 24, four days after his arrival in Nigeria.

Across the web, people have expressed anger that the Liberian did not take adequate measures in consideration of others’ health, especially as his sister had succumbed to the disease. This highlights the impact of personal responsibility in handling the disease. However, the incident also reveals the bigger issue at hand which health officials need to contend with in controlling the disease: the screening and monitoring of individuals. Had Liberia’s airport officials been ordered to screen outgoing travelers in order to protect other countries on the continent, they could have prevented Ebola’s spread to Nigeria.

In recognition of the need to control Ebola’s spread, President Goodluck Jonathan today has ordered additional protective equipment for health and border officials.

    Hmnnn….
What was going through late Sawyer’s mind as he scampered from Monrovia, Liberia to the planes(one to Lome, and the other to Lagos) that brought him to Lagos, Nigeria, we may not fully know. I could realize that my hitherto hypothesis was fatally wrong!
So, could it be that he didn’t want to infect fellow human beings, but he was FEROCIOUSLY DRIVEN BY THE EXCESSIVE LOVE OF MONEY to make the journey? Because, as an official of Liberia to the conference/meeting in Nigeria, he would have received estacode. I’m still investigating whether this is a manifestation of the FURIES at the End of Time.

      Dear Prof.,

It’s our worst nightmare become reality. I’ll add it to your other comments and post.

Thanks for bringing all these learned contributions to my blog. Thanks, too, for acknowledging an uninformed opinion that just happened to have [sort of] hit the nail on the head. Can you believe that the man was said to have lain on his stomach at the airport somewhere writhing in pain?

      Regards,
      TOLA.
