Venus & Serena: Like old times (almost), again! – Tola Adenle

Sports

I really have no favorite between the Williams sisters.

Having said that, it was difficult, as usual, watching the match as I always choose a side when watching any match:  soccer, basketball and other sports, including even Rugby in which New Zealand’s ALL BLACK is MY team.  Without favoring a side, I’m never able to enjoy a match, and I’ve never really been able to enjoy matches between the sisters. While I can reel of stats from matches between each of them and OTHER ladies on the tour, I’m almost blank about details of their encounters.

I do not know how it happened but I suddenly found myself as match time neared wishing Serena would win!

The first set was a toe-to-toe affair with each lady holding their serves which inevitably took to the match to a tie-breaker.  I started saying, “come on Serena” without realizing it until the second shout that my spouse wondered why I was supporting one over the other which I had never done.  I blurted without even having to think of it:  Serena has a few more records to break!  Serena takes the first set 7-6.

So much for choosing a side because Venus quickly ran to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd set before Serena makes the board but she could not catch up as Venus wrapped up the set with a 6-2 score.

The final set started off rather slowly but Venus was the first to come on the board with the first game and it would be another toe-to-toe start as each lady held her service game but by Serena’s 8th double fault in the 3rd set, I was sure I had backed the wrong Williams and to hell with records.  Montreal is going to be Venus Opening Glee – she likes dancing – for her final Hurray in Singles.

At Double Fault #9, I’m giving up.  5-3, Come on Serena but it’s 15-40 Serena, and 2 match points Venus.  Darn!

Congratulations, Venus.  Montreal must be the opening act to the final hurray; I can pump it up tomorrow for the finals!  Look out ladies of the tour at the Billie Jean King Center at U.S. Open; the gazelle is back.
