NIGERIA: The building collapse at Pastor Temitope Joshua’s complex that has taken 70 lives so far – Tola Adenle

September 18, 2014

Faith, Nigeria

The ultra high-flying Lagos, Nigeria real estate market coupled with Nigeria’s deep corruption at every governance level has led to the collapse of a structure at the premises of Pastor Temitope Joshua’s Church of All Nations.

What led to the collapse of the building that has taken this heavy toll in human lives is not uncommon in Lagos.  A building previously approved for a number of floors suddenly gets additional multi-story added without approval although that is never really true.

The owner/developer may originally lack approval but at one stage during construction, he would be visited by officials from the appropriate government department who would, for a fee, help procure necessary approval documents and look elsewhere while the building construction continues.  Meanwhile, nobody checks – nor cares – what took place at the foundation level:  is it strong enough to carry the extra load, or how it can be fortified to withstand the extra load that was not in the construction calculation at the foundation level.

It happens so often that sad to say that it’s not going to be the last as long as the potent mixture of corruption and short cuts to make money are ever present.

Meanwhile, it is being widely reported by the Nigerian press that Joshua claims it is the work of Boko Haram who flew a plane over the complex.

Joshua is known to have ardent followers in Nigeria and beyond, including a couple of African Heads of State, and it was widely believed that Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian who brought ebola into Nigeria, was in a death-struggle race to reach Joshua, perhaps for healing during his last days in Nigeria.

TOLA.
