Many Liberian Doctors—Including President Sirleaf’s Son—Are Staying Away – Wall Street Journal/Patrick McGroarty

October 20, 2014

Africa, Health

“It is the duty of all of us as global citizens to send a message that we will not leave millions of West Africans to fend for themselves,” Mrs. Sirleaf said. In line with that message, the president in late August fired state officials who refused to come home from abroad to help Liberia battle Ebola.

At that time, however, her son, Dr. James Adama Sirleaf, was returning to his family in Georgia, after deciding to pull his medical training group out of his homeland because of mounting risks to doctors there.

“ The symbolism of me going there and potentially getting Ebola when I have a nine- and a seven-year-old at home isn’t worth it just to appease people. Dr. Sirleaf. ”
—Dr. James Adama Sirleaf

The son of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has displayed an attitude common among the ruling class in Africa – self- centerdness. If wealth is being shared in Liberia, this selfish man will get more than his due. This is unfortunate. What does his mother have to say about this? Liberia shoul disown him.

      Dear Dr. denle,

I concur on every suggestion you’ve made here.

And while at it – disowning the son – the clueless and wicked mother should be run out of town/out of country with the selfish and unpatriotic son.

      Regards,
      TOLA.

[Please Doctor, what msg did you send from your medical assoc to this woman? Would it be possible for you to let her know the kind of comments here about her non-performing government? Would it be possible for your Association of Medical professionals of Liberia … to let her know she has a grown son who is a disgrace to her and, worse, to Liberia, a country that has done much for their family?]

I’d be grateful. You do have my best regards,
      TOLA.

A bizarre information. I wish it is not like as reported. Should every medical personnel run away to safety as Dr Sirleaf did (the Liberian President’s son), who would take care of those infected by the dreaded disease. So he would have the effontery in the future to beg for Liberians’ votes if he wants to contest any election. I hope the Liberians then will remind him of this cowardice act.

This again brings to mind the ethical practice of late Dr Adadevoh. May her soul rest in peace. She will ever be remembered as a medical doctor that did not run away from her calling when the need arose.

      Dear Fatai,

Right on the mark, as always!

Can you imagine the mother of this man-boy sanctioning government officials who did what her son has done! A real coward and parasite with the typical Americo-Liberian’s sense of entitlement. I had heard earlier that he practised in Atlanta because he met someone I know in a town outside Atlanta.

These African heads of states who live off their poor citizens send their kids abroad to study while leaving the education sector of their countries in tatters, and now one who will not even stand up and be counted when his country is calling on all countries to come to her aid. You know that since this crisis started, I have suspected Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf as incompetent, pardon me.

I think Liberians should march to her gilded cage in Monrovia and march her right out for the shameless deed of her son and for the very incompetent way she has handled the ebola outbreak. Can you believe the puerile idea that Late Duncan would face legal action for what he did? Or calling the other ebola exporter “undisciplined man” when he left quarantine to travel to Nigeria on a government-approved program, OR describing Duncan as a “jerk”!

I thought this woman rose high enough to work at either the UN or such intl organization. Incredible!

      Regards,
      TOLA.
