In a muted endorsement, Soyinka calls on Nigerians for a “a leap of faith” with the probably “born again” Buhari over Jonathan, “the Rep from Nigeria’s past, still present…” – Tola Adenle

Nigeria

… an unnamed “former ruler,” who, having been presumed to have been “purged and transformed by a close encounter with death, and imprisonment, has turned out to be an embodiment of incorrigibility on several fronts, including a contempt for law and constitution.

“This persistent candidate seeks return, but let him understand that it can only be as a debtor to the past, and that the future cannot wait to collect …”

Most Nigerians do not have to guess whom Soyinka’s first quote refers to: retired General Obasanjo, the twice ruler of Nigeria who firmly laid the foundation for Nigeria’s present predicament during his non-military presidency when he had the golden opportunity to turn Nigeria from her ruinous past direction but chose to pursue the so-called Third Term, apart from many other policy missteps and inconsistencies.

The second, the “persistent candidate” is none other than retired General Buhari who has run for the presidency unsuccessfully multiple times and carries the dent and mistrust from a section of Nigerians from his rulership of Nigeria under the military when he not only employed retroactive draconian laws to sentence some Nigerian young men to death for drug offences but to also sentence journalists to jail as well as permitted a situation that had police attempt to enforce Islamic dress code.

This blogger has written about her encounter at downtown Ibadan by Nigerian policemen because she wore pants, on emotanafricana.com during the period.

I have also persistently written since 2011 that he is the only one who can slay the corruption monster.

“As recently as before the 2007 (s)elections sealed whatever shot retd. General Obasanjo (rGO) might have had at statesman-hood, I had wondered aloud in my rested weekly essays for this paper why General Buhari would not let Nigerians know what his feelings about democracy and religion were. I had a personal experience of the effort to force a state religion down Nigerians’ collective throat during his rulership. It was apparent that retd. General Babangida’s misadventure to turn Nigeria into a Muslim country was similar to Buhari’s.

As I shopped at Old Gbagi, Ibadan, one afternoon in ‘84/85, a commotion suddenly developed as word went round that policemen were out arresting women who wore pants! I was a culprit and made for my car, unwilling to wait for verification in the then suffocating environment of religious fanaticism.”

      Dear Mr. Adenle,

Thanks for this but a collective systematic “committing suicide” has been what Nigeria seems to have been doing, especially since 1999 when Nigeria went under the vise grip of the PDP.

Pardon me, I’m NOT by any stretch of the imagination touting the leading opposition APC as a benevolent patriotic party as is evidenced by the motley crowd that has now gathered under the “progressive” banner of the party. MOST in politics in Nigeria, just about ALL, are in it for the looting that has now been entrenched not only by the PDP but by all other parties. Would/Could Nigeria have been in this mess, for example, if all those “progressives” in the law-making houses flatly opposed and rejected the massive salaries they turned around and awarded themselves after a legally-vested revenue body had decided on pays and perks?

Hard-core reactionaries not only cross from acknowledged reactionary party, the PDP, but are eagerly wooed by APC leadership.

Nigeria does not NOT have a situation of good, better and best right now which is why retired General Buhari whom, I’m sure you know my position about, is a candidate Wole Soyinka believes deserves a leap of faith on what can be judging from his experiences since the last sad time he ruled Nigeria.

I came by my conversion to Buhari before the last election cycle of 2007 because what was going on in governance called for a radical departure from the huge mess we were in. I believe that Soyinka’s well-founded cynicism and distrust of those who have ruled Nigeria since “independence” is more than well-founded and even if I had not been so decided in favor of the retired General, Soyinka’s muted endorsement would have given me the push to go with him because his interest has always been on the side of public good.

A “mass suicide” would be to throw away the baby with the bath water, as the saying goes. This is Buhari’s last chance and it just happens to be Nigeria’s probable last chance to change direction from a situation that has become acceptable: MOST rulers at every level of governance not only dip hands into treasuries but also take over government buildings, huge pieces of land, government holdings, etcetera.

Help us all by avoiding the all-cap commentaries.

      Regards,
      TOLA.
