In a historic shift which has left Labour Party in tatters in Scotland, and a definite question mark on the recent rejection of independence by the majority in the referendum of under a year ago.

Nicola Sturgeon-led Scottish Nationalist Party won 56 of the 59 seats in an election that saw major casualties, including former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s previously-held constituency of Kirkcaldy and Cowderbeath AND the seat of Scottish Labor leader, Mr. Murphy.

The former PM Brown gave a passionate speech on the eve of the Referendum last year on why Scotland should not vote “yes” to a split.

This historic win for the Scottish Nationalists also turns up another historic win:  Ms. Mhairi Black, a 20-year old student whose defeat of the Scottish Labor leader, Mr. Murphy, becomes the youngest Member of Parliament in almost 340 years.  She is the one who [sort of] pulled out the dagger with which the SNP has slain Labor north of the border.

I watched a television interview of Ms. Black in England a couple of weeks ago as she campaigned from door to door in which the reporter asked what it would mean for her to win against Murphy.  Her answer, though calm and unpretentious, had a tone of a seasoned politician:  she said she did not think of whom she was up against at all!

I bet Mr. Murphy did not, either but he must be ruing what has befallen him now.
