Society/Living

Mr. Isaac OreọfẹỌlọrunl’oju – I. O’L’oju/I.O to family and friends, and his wife, Mrs. Esther Tinukẹ Adamolekun (nee Aluko), were both laid to rest at the St. Stephen’s Anglican Archdeaconry cemetery on Saturday, April 16 after a joint funeral service at the Archdeaconry church.

Their many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as all surviving sons and daughters of late Chief J.F. Adamolekun, including this blogger, were present at the celebratory service. Also present were many of Mama’s siblings and relations from the famous Aluko family of Itaogbolu, Iju’s Twin Town, led by Mr. Akin Aluko, a retired permanent secretary.

Lawyer Adamolekun, who studied Law at the University of London, met Auntie Tinu at famed Christ’s School, Ado-Ekiti where they were both students in the 1940s. Papa also attended St. Andrew’s College, Oyo while Mama’s education included the famous Kudeti Girls’ School, Ibadan.

While Mama was a teacher throughout her career, Papa taught for a while, including at the CMS Grammar School, Bariga before they left for England in pursuit of the “golden fleece.”

His Grace, the Most Reverend Archbishop (Dr.) O. Abe who preached the sermon, remarked the unusual-ness of a couple being buried at the same time as it was his first but with Lawyer Adamolekun preceding his wife in death by a mere couple of weeks, the children decided a joint final farewell would be very much in order.

It was a grand re-union of many Adamolekuns and Alukos for a grand second time. This blogger and a sister were present – well, sort of – at the wedding in the early 1950s but could not enter the church to which we had walked three miles from home to St. James’ Church, Itaogbolu as we were not included in the party.  Our parents never knew the 6- and 7-year-olds (sort of) attended the wedding!

Among the children, grandchildren and great-grand children left to mourn Lawyer & Mrs. I.O. Adamolekun are retired UI-trained Army medical doctor, Col. O.S.B. Adamolekun, Ms. Margaret Adamolekun, Mrs. Stella Ilesanmi and Mrs. Waleola Ọjọmọ.

May their souls rest in perfect peace.
