C’mon Girl, there’s still work to do on the tons of issues that call on us, AND there IS life to be lived! – Tola;  ” … the sun will rise again.” – Lynn Yaeger

How to Light a Spark on This Very Dark Day

When the unthinkable happens, when you wake up to a nightmare, when there is nothing that anyone can say that will make you feel the least bit better, when all the things you were looking forward to—the holiday windows, your boho Thanksgiving in Bushwick, those ridiculous boots you have been scheming to buy—seem hollow and stale and worthless, what do you do?

You dry your tears, you look inside yourself, and you try your hardest to light a spark. You think of all the steps you can take, maybe just small ones at first—giving more than you’re comfortable with to Planned Parenthood or the Coalition for the Homeless or God’s Love We Deliver.  And you consider resisting in larger ways, too: making sure the demonstrations against gun violence in your town are humongous; thinking about building another brilliant movement like Occupy Wall Street. And you keep your eyes fixed firmly on the next election—two years isn’t that long! And you talk really seriously to your friends, your coworkers, and all the children you know, reminding them—and yourself! —of all the challenges we have overcome, all the barriers we have vanquished.

The struggle for civil rights was soaked in blood! The fight for women’s rights began more than a century ago! There wasn’t always a minimum wage—though of course we have to raise it! The right to love and marry whomever you chose?  Barely thinkable even a few short years ago. People fought and died for these victories. It was never an easy ride.

In the last scene of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, one of the survivors turns to his friends and says, “The world only spins forward. We will be citizens. The time has come.”

The time is here, though it may not feel like it this morning.  We will rise again.

Indeed yesterday was a sad day for those who mean well for this great country called USA. However let us all believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel. We must not despair as the unthinkable happened yesterday. The Lord knows why. We shall rise again the freedom lovers

      Dear Doctor,

      Thanks for this.

I’m sure the true story of Trump’s so-called populist movement that “won” the White House will be known some day. Too many things defy logic and do not add up but light at the end of this dark tunnel, though imminent, would take quite a while to materialize.

      Regards,
      TOLA.

We ought to begin to play-role scenarios of Trump appointing 4 Supreme Court Justices to understand the struggles and realities ahead. The Republicans now control majorities in both Senate and House of Reps. as well as the Govs., under an untameable Trump: the reason every citizen ought to understand and appreciate the sovereignty of their vote.

      Dear Adetoye,

Like many, I understand your point but those whom Trump conned with pie-in-the-sky promises and hatred to fulfill every racist’s dream of his new America that would be a replica of pre-civil rights America, would soon see him for the so-called “university” founder that he is:

I will never forget how Bloomberg described him at the Dems’ convention in July: something like “… I’m from new York, we know a con man when we see one!”

      Greetings,
      TOLA.
