U.S. Senator John McCain, whose family announced on August 24 that the Senator was discontinuing treatment for brain cancer that felled him over a year ago, died at his ranch in Sedona, Arizona on the  25th.  He was 81 years old.

Countless and well-deserved tributes that have been pouring in for him are on the web but this heartfelt sympathy by blogger, a non-sympathiser of theRepublican Party, had been earned by the Senator – despite his head to head challenge of Obama for whom the political stars had perfectly aligned in 1988 – for the bipartisan way he would work in the Senate if he believed it was the right thing to do, for example, the McCain-Feingold Campaign Reform Act.

And what of the improbable friendship with a lion of liberalism, late Senator Ted Kennedy for whom – according to social media fact checkers – the bells tolled exactly nine years to the death of his dear friend, McCain. Their friendship might have been forged through political cooperation by two goals-oriented from opposite sides of the political aisle on the Armed Services Committee, but it became a genuine friendship of two real patriots for whom America was always first – & great – even as they always kept the country’s Number One position among all nations never far from mind.

As McCain said as regards his friend’s view of America’s place in the world during an interview for the Edward Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate:

“… A lot of people think about Senator Kennedy mostly on domestic issues, but he also had a great vision about America’s greatness; obviously, his two brothers had the same. He was more active on the Armed Services Committee, as we know, than was apparent to people on the outside …” [https://www.emkinstitute.org/resources/john-mccain]

I’m sure Ted Kennedy must have harbored the same feeling about John McCain.

May McCain’s soul find eternal rest with the Lord, and may the ideals for which he lived and fought for kindle a spark of patriotism in his diminished colleagues for whom the idea of Nation before all else seems to have evaporated in the madness of these times. And may God grant his family the strength to bear this irreparable loss which burden should be slightly lighter with the knowledge that Senator McCain has left a legacy like his forbears which nothing, including the present insanity, can erase or even dim.
